The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, has appealed to the electorate to vote his party back to power in the 2008 elections.His plea seemed to suggest how badly the NDC as a party needed power and the difficulties they had been going through while in opposition.According to him, since the New Patriotic Party (NPP) under President Kufuor had failed the country, the viable alternative to solving the myriad of problems bedevilling the country was the NDC.Prof. Mills was speaking to residents of the Weija Constituency in the Ga West District of the Greater Accra region on Monday, as he kick-started his house-to-house and one-to-one campaign, as a new strategy of whipping up interest in the electorate, particularly those regarded as ‘floating voters’.The NDC flagbearer, who was accompanied by the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the party, Mr. Danny Annang, Madam Sherry Ayittey, Mr. Jerry Acquaye Thompson, a former Ga East District Chief Executive under the NDC administration, Madam Vivian Ankrah, the Regional Women’s Organiser and Mr. Antwi Bosiako Sekyere, the Campaign Manager of Prof. Mills, visited Kwashieman, Santa Maria, Gbawe, Oblogo, Sowutuom, Chantan, Bulemin and Mallam.Speaking to a cross section of residents, artisans and drivers, Prof. Mills noted that the change of government from the NDC to the NPP was divinely necessitated so that Ghanaians would appreciate the difference between the two parties.According to him, now that Ghanaians have ‘tasted’ the two, it was clear that the NDC was better.He therefore called on the electorate to reject the Kufuor administration in the 2008 elections, stressing that the NPP had failed Ghanaians, especially with the energy crisis currently bedevilling the country.Prof. Mills was of the view that the NPP had not been transparent and honest with the people.He told the electorate that the NDC had learned a lot while in opposition and would therefore not be complacent when given the mandate to rule the country.“I am concerned about the youth especially those who applied for job but did not get any,” in apparent reference to the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP).The NDC flagbearer advised the electorate not to allow any politician to influence them with money, since accepting such monies could be likened to selling their children to an ‘outsider’.He stated that Ghanaians were suffering because the national cake was concentrated in the hands of a few people.Prof. Mills assured them that when the NDC gets the mandate to rule the country in 2008, the national cake would be evenly distributed.He told the people that he had come to thank them for their support and encouragement during the flagbearership campaign.Credit: Daily Guide
