The Ashanti Regional chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Daniel Ohene Agyekum has stated that members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will be shocked come 2008, as the NDC is leaving no stone unturned in its bid to win the 2008 elections. He said not only would the NPP lose the presidential election to the NDC, but also it would lose more of its parliamentary seats in the Ashanti Region. Mr. Ohene Agyekum made the statement in an interview with DAILY GUIDE in Kumasi. According to him, NPP had a big battle to fight if it was determined to retain power after the 2008 elections. This, according to him, is because the electorates have now assessed the two strong parties, (NDC and NPP) and now know which one of them was capable of governing the country better. Mr. Ohene Agyekum said there were many strategies the NPP was adopting to throw dust into the eyes of Ghanaians, adding that those strategies would surely not work as the people had tasted both alcohol and water (referring to the administrations of the two parties). He sounded a word of caution to NPP leaders not to deceive themselves and their supporters by bragging that they had the potential of snatching even the three seats currently being occupied by the NDC in Ashanti, in the next elections. Ohene Agyekum stated categorically that NDC could snatch three more parliamentary seats from the NPP in the Ashanti Region apart from the three it currently had. According to the Ashanti NDC Chairman, as the various NPP MPs in the country were toying with Ghanaians and fighting for various leadership positions, NDC MPs in the Ashanti Region were working tirelessly to show the electorates how competent they were. He pointed out that apart from the fact that the NPP administration was not performing, corruption records in its era had also gone up. According to him, what disturbed him most was that President Kufuor and his government, who promised zero tolerance for corruption had turned a blind eye to the situation. Mr. Ohene Agyekum remarked that since the NPP had refused to check corrupt practices and look into allegations against some NPP gurus, they (NDC) would critically look into such matters when they returned to power in 2009. Commenting on the discovery of oil in the country, Mr. Ohene Agyekum said there was no reason for the NPP government to take credit solely, as the oil was first detected under the NDC regime.
