The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it will soon begin a programme to put unemployed youth into self-sustaining jobs.The party believes this is a sure way to minimize recent violence perpetuated by some NDC youth.Just a little over one year into the Mills administration, some NDC youth have taken the law into their hands, committing crimes from seizing public property to issuing death threats on some top government officials.The NDC youth claim they are without jobs and party bigwigs have turned a blind eye to their plight.However, national organizer of the NDC, Yaw Gyan, says a skills training project to start soon should work the magic.“Those who do not possess those qualifications as carpenters and masons steel benders and they will form [an] artisan squad in the constituencies and in the districts for them to, at least, get some of these contracts that will be awarded by the district assemblies,” Mr Gyan said.The youth will also be taught how to use local materials to build, and the party expects to train up to 50,000 youth around the country.Mr Gyan said this is the best offer for the youth since many are not educated.“Now they are calling for the dismissal of some people who are in government agencies because these people are perceived to be supporters of the NPP and we are telling them if these people are sacked and they are replaced by them, they (supporters) should also bear in mind that when NPP comes back to power they will also be sacked. So if you are skilfully trained, then, of course, you have a perpetual job doing so that, at the end of the day, you will not rely on your party being in power before you earn some living,” Mr Gyan added.Meanwhile, former CPP presidential aspirant, Dr. Badu Agyeman Akosa, says although the programme is a good one, he thinks the 50,000 target is ridiculous.“While I commend government that it is a step in the right direction, I am saying it is a drop in the ocean because the numbers is huge,” he indicated.Source: Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
