The Research and Advocacy Platform [RAP] of the National Democratic Congress [NDC] has petitioned the Parliament to sanction the Member of Parliament for Okaikoi South, Nana Akomea, over the insults he hurled at Deputy Tourism Minister, James Agyenim Boateng on Multi TV and Joy FM’s news analysis program Newsfile last Saturday.According to the group, Nana Akomea by his actions has tarnished the image of Mr. Agyenim Boateng.Spokesperson for the group, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu explained that the group is “appalled by the conduct of Nana Akomea, we do not believe that a man of his station must allow the kind of words that proceeded from his mouth to come out of his mouth. He should never have done that. Even what is worse, is that having done what he did, he was prevailed upon by the host of the show to withdraw and apologize and he refused. That again sets a very bad precedence.”He also added that “we are extremely worried that Nana Akomea will engage in a conspiracy with other members of the NPP to deliberately undermine the integrity of James Agyenim Boateng. So what he has done has completely stripped him of any legitimacy to continue to represent the people of Okaikoi South in parliament.”The Research and Advocacy Platform wants Parliament to “haul Nana Akomea before the Privileges Committee so that they will take him through disciplinary proceedings with the view to meting out severe sanctions out to him so it will serve as a deterrent to all those out there who want to engage in this kind of unethical behavior.”But commenting on the issue on Joy FM’s Top Story, former Member of Parliament for Elembele and former Chairman of Parliament’s privileges committee, Freddy Blay said the Committee on its own cannot decide to handle the issue.According to him, the Speaker of Parliament will have to refer the matter to the Privileges Committee before it can take action.
