Former President Jerry Rawlings will on Saturday mark the thirty-second anniversary of the June 4 uprising. In 1979 junior officers of the military took up arms and overthrew then military leader Lieutenant General Fredrick Akuffo. Ahead of that, the NDC which Mr. Rawlings founded after leaving the air force is hoping this year’s celebration themed – Unity in Diversity, Our Strength – would help patch up divisions within the party. Richard Quashigah, Propaganda Secretary of the National Democratic Congress told Joy News the celebration is to remind people of the ills that necessitated the June 4 uprising. He said the theme of the celebration refers not only to the NDC but the generality of the population and areas where there are conflicts. Meanwhile the Northern regional Coordinating Council has denied sending a message to all local level political heads to actively participate in the June 4 event tomorrow. Regional Minister, Moses Mabenga explained that it was rather the June 4 planning committee which sent a wireless message to the council for all local heads to be invited to take part in tomorrow’s event. The anniversary of the coup that brought former President Rawlings into office will be marked in the Ashanti Regional capital. Source: Joy News/Ghana
