A Deputy General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Adams says the NDC is not afraid to hand over power if it loses the 2012 Presidential election. According to him, the NDC set a record in Ghana by handing over power in 2000 when the party lost the elections to the opposition NPP. The statement came after Director of Communications at the Office of the President, Koku Anyidoho was reported to have warned the flagbearer of the opposition NPP that he would be dealt with if he offended the law. The opposition NPP has chastised Koku Anyidoho for 'threatening' its flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo and accused the ruling government of trying, through the threats, to hold on to power if it loses the 2012 elections. Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Friday, Kofi Adams noted that Ghanaians should not entertain fear that the NDC will refuse to hand over power in 2012 if it loses, emphasizing that “the NDC is ever ready to hand over power”. He disagreed with the Director of Communications at the office of the President for threatening to show the opposition leader where power lies, saying that “you can say that you deal with someone if he threatens the peace of the nation as the constitution states but cannot say you will show him where power lies because we are not ruled with power but the constitution of the land”. He stressed that he has no problem with Koku Anyidoho daring Nana Akufo-Addo, except that some of the words he chose were wrong especially for threatening to show him where power lies. “Even though there are a lot of intentions in the country as we heard towards election 2012, nobody should be afraid that we will hold on to power. The NPP and others who are claiming we want to still stay in power even if we lose have forgotten we handed over power peacefully in 2000 when we lost under former president Rawlings” he asserted. Mr. Kofi Adams said statements like all-die-be-die, I will win at all cost and I show you where power lies does not go down well for the democratic dispensation of the country. He reckoned that though the statement by Koku Anyidoho is being defended by all party members when given the benefit of hindsight, he would not repeat it again just as Nana Addo and his 'all die be die'. ”I think the political atmosphere is hot but will come down if political leaders are prepared to do so”. The Spokesperson Rawlingses predicted victory for the NDC government led by President John Evans Atta-Mills. He said the victory of the party will depend on how effective the parliamentary primaries would be managed. “our victory will depend on how effective we can manage our primaries devoid of rancor and bickering for defeated candidates to join the victors to campaign for 2012”. He hinted that the problem confronting the party is the ability to communicate its achievements to Ghanaians. “Though there is more to be done by the party, those that we are able to do, it is not being communicated well by both t he party and government”. As if he does not believe in the successes chopped by the party in barely years in power, Kofi Adams stressed that the NDC government led by president mills has done what it could do; the electorates will be the best judges adding that the government is on course. Commenting on whether the former President Rawlings will campaign for the party or not in the 2012 elections, Kofi Adams said it will be known when it is time for campaign. He said going to ask the former first family whether they would campaign for the party or not in 2012 is unnecessary. “For me I don’t know whether they would campaign or not. There is no need for me to go and ask Rawlings whether he would campaign for the party or not because it is not time yet”. Mr. Kofi Adams however declared that former President Rawlings has no other party than the NDC which he is its founder. “So some people who are claiming they have formed a new party and that Rawlings is their founder should not be taken serious because he is still in the NDC”. The former President Rawlings has declared his intention not to campaign for the NDC in 2012 because he has no message for the electorates but Kofi Adams believes that “so far Rawlings has said he had no message to tell electorates in the past doesn’t mean in 2012 he wouldn’t still have a message. Let’s wait to see as we proceed to 2012”.
