A former member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sekou Nkrumah says he left the party because the "leadership lacked the commitment to make Ghana better for the ordinary folks."

The son of former President Nkrumah took to social media to state his stance on Ghanaian politics and why he was no longer part of the opposition party, NDC.

In his statement, he said, "As I always say I don't need to champion the interest of the rich or wealthy in society, I rather prefer to empower the underprivileged and believe that through policies tailored to their benefit can raise their standard of living!

"So I ate humble pie and joined NDC in 2007 but unfortunately, I realised that the leadership lacked commitment to make Ghana better for the ordinary folks."

Mr Sekou Nkrumah stated that he joined the NDC on April 4, 2007, because he believed that merging "his political vehicle the CPP with that of the NDC" was the best way to honour the memory of his father.

He said the death of former President Jerry John Rawlings compelled him to make these revelations.

Former President J.J. Rawlings died at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital on November 12, after contracting Covid-19.

"The truth is that J.J. too did a lot of bad things in the name of revolution, excess far beyond those of Nkrumah, and he also fell short in intellectual presentation as compared to Nkrumah who articulated his social justice and pan African vision extremely well!

"But the fact is both men were revolutionary in their thought and action process and championed the interest of the ordinary folks," he added.

According to Mr Sekou Nkrumah, his purpose is to "fight" the elite to ensure the national cake is distributed fairly and equally.

"I came to the conclusion that those in politics are just there to serve their interest, and that the political elite in Ghana is represented in both NPP and NDC!

"Since then, I have been fighting the elite and will continue to do so without fear or favour," he stated.
