Deputy Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Samuel Awuku, has fingered some leading members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) as being behind threats against the Chief Justice.According to him, these leading figures in the government and party are behind the scenes, encouraging their footsoldiers to terrorise the CJ - and the entire judicial system - in their desperate bid to remove her from her post by hook or crook.Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood lodged a formal complaint to the Inspector General of Police over threats on her life. A group calling itself the Network for Social Democrats, last week, called on her to resign or be forced out "through the narrow window.”Chief Inspector Kweku Dompreh of the Greater Accra Regional Police Public Relations Unit said in an interview with Peace FM Tuesday morning that the Police have begun investigating the issue.Samuel Awuku, who was contributing to discussions on Kokrokoo Tuesday, has categorically stated that he had no doubts that NDC youths were being pushed by leading figures of the party to perpetuate such an agenda.He recalled statements made by NDC Chairman, Dr Kwabena Adjei, that "there are many ways of killing a cat" when the government continually lost some high profile cases in court.In his view, the Chairman should have been punished for making such an unguarded statement, which he believed had emboldened others to issue threats to the judiciary, especially the CJ.Again, he referred to comments made by NDC National Propaganda Secretary, Richard Quashigah that the CJ should resign to save the little integrity she has left.Looking at the language these two leading figures of the ruling party has used, as well as those of other party activists, Samul Awuku noted he was convinced that what was going on was a deliberate ploy by the NDC as a party to oust the CJ.He said they were determined to do this even using a legal means and if they failed would employ unorthodox means to achieve their aim.Mr Awuku was also worried about what he claimed had been the trend since the assumption of office of the Mills-led administration, that the CJ has had no peace or breathing space because she has been attacked unnecessarily.The constant bastardising of the judiciary, according to him, could also cause Ghanaians to lose confidence in the judiciary.He urged all Ghanaians who believed the CJ was doing a good job to remember her in their prayers, saying that “the NDC government is totally hostile to the judiciary.”Story by Dorcas Efe Mensah/myjoyonline.com/Ghana
