A member of the communications team of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fred Agbenyo has rendered an unqualified apology to labour unions over comments made by National Security Advisor, Brigadier General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah (rtd).

The security capo has come under a barrage of attacks over his request to striking workers to “take their passport” and “get out” the country if they were not prepared to sacrifice.

Brigadier General Nunoo-Mensah (rtd), at the commission of a nine-unit classroom block at the O’Reilly Senior High School last Saturday, expressed his frustration over the incessant strikes in the country and called on government to suspend salaries of such striking workers.

Some political parties including the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have called for the dismissal of the Security Advisor. they claimed the comment poses a security threat.

Labour unions and civil society groups also want the security capo to render an apology to put matter to rest.

But Nunoo Mensah on BBCon  Monday, stated unequivocally that he will not apologize for speaking the truth.

However, on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme on Tuesday, Fred Agbenyo insisted the Security Advisor should be pardoned for the apologetic comment.

According to him, given his training in the military,  Nunoo-Mensah sometimes becomes apprehensive when workers put unnecessary pressure on government.

Fred Agbenyo said even though the Security Advisor’s comment is ill-timed, most of the strikes are so provoking that it attracts unpalatable comments.

The NDC man could not fathom why workers embark on strikes when they are paid complete salaries at the end of every month.

Fred Agbenyo believes it was about time workers put the interest of Ghana first and sacrifice for the country than their parochial interest.
