‘Ransom’ negotiations are going on between supporters of the National Democratic Congress who seized a lorry park at Ashaiman, and some leaders of the party. The negotiations are exactly what the hijackers had in mind when they seized the lorry station Thursday claiming their leaders had reneged on promises of providing them with jobs if the party won elections. The disgruntled members of the ruling party vowed to keep the station until their leaders addressed their grievances.Spokesperson for the group, Abdulai Abunakar, told Joy News that prior to the 2008 elections, delegates from the NDC executive held several meetings with them at which they were promised jobs.He said they were promised jobs in the security agencies and as guards for state institutions. But after the elections there are no signs of attempts to fulfill them.“Even after the election none of the executives or even the people from above who use to take us to Mantse Agbonaa, Takoradi, Cape Coast, and other places have come to sit us down to tell us the plan they have for us.“We are not going to give them the chance, not until they recognise us the way they did when they were in opposition. Because the way they abandon us if we give them the least chance then its going to be next four years, and for politicians the way we follow them we now know the tricks they play; they use you and damp you. We are not going to give them chance,” he said.“Not until they secure the jobs that they promised us we are not going to leave the station,” he vowedIn response, the Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, Mr. Alfred Agbesi, has told Joy News it was not totally accurate that the party promised the Ashaiman supporters specific jobs.He concedes though, that the party said it was going to create jobs.Mr. Agbesi said the party leaders were nonetheless meeting with the aggrieved supporters to try and address their concerns, adding, "surely we met last night and we will be meeting them again."Story by Malik Abass Daabu/Myjoyonline.com
