The NDC Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Mr Joe Gidisu has rubbished calls by a group for the separation of the Volta Region from the rest of the country.
Mr Gidisu, who is also a member of the Volta Caucus in Parliament, said a separation of the Volta region from the rest of the country has serious political and economic implications for the country.
A group, which calls itself the Homeland Study Group Foundation and claims to have more than one million members, is asking for a reversal of the 1956 plebiscite that joined the Trans Volta Togoland to the Gold Coast.
The Public Relations Officer of the group, Captain Christopher told Joy News that majority of the people are in favour of the separation.
“Our concern is that 58 per cent of the people in the plebiscite said yes to form a union with the Gold Coast and 42 said no. But there was a sizeable number which did not vote at all,” he said.
But the MP for North Tongu, Mr Gidisu has dismissed the group’s calls saying it is not the way to go.
“The situation with regards to the Volta Region being declared a state by itself is neither here nor there. This situation is not in the best interest of us and the nation,” Mr Gidisu said.
