After haggling over a litany of settlement and judgment debts for several months, the two leading political parties in Ghana are now quarreling over who owns a slogan for the 2012 elections. The National Democratic Congress claims “People Matter, You Matter” is their bonafide property based on the social democratic credentials of the party. But the New Patriotic Party insists the slogan has for a year now been the title of the NPP, 2012 Manifesto, chosen after the party held personal interactions with the suffering masses.Officials of the two parties, Elvis Afriyie Ankra who is also the deputy Local Government Minister as well as the manifesto Co-ordinator of the NPP, Yoofi Grant, Friday split hairs on Joy FM over who is the rightful owner of the slogan.Elvis Ankra shot the first salvo, saying the NPP with their property owning credentials cannot profess to be owners of the “People Matter, You Matter” slogan. On the contrary, he said the NDC is a party that cares for the ordinary people, and the slogan came up in one of the hall meetings with the people. He said he has been collating ideas from the people and from those ideas came the slogan. He said the NPP cannot claim to be the apostles of wisdom and accuse them of stealing a slogan. But Yoofi Grant told Joy News’ Jefferson Sackey the slogan came from the party’s flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo who has for over a year now been meeting with the people on his listening and restore hope tours across the country. He said for another party to be claiming ownership of the slogan only goes to show that the NDC has bought into the ideas of Nana Addo. The two parties for some mysterious reasons have the same slogan and have set the same date for the campaign launch. It is unclear if the launch will be at the same venue.
