The Parliamentary Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for Tamale Central, Prof Alidu Mahama Seidu, has formally submitted his nomination forms to the Electoral Commission to contest the forthcoming by-election scheduled for Tuesday, 30 September 2025.
Prof Seidu secured his candidacy with a commanding victory in the party’s internal primary, held at the Alhaji Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium on Saturday, 6 September.
He secured 840 votes out of 1,511 valid ballots cast, beating 11 other contenders in what was a hotly contested race.
His closest challenger, former Tamale Metropolitan Assembly Mayor Abdul Hanan Gundadoo, polled 536 votes, while the remaining candidates shared the rest of the ballots.
According to media reports, candidates from the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) and the People’s National Congress (PNC) have also picked up forms to enter the contest, but have yet to submit them.
The Electoral Commission has set Wednesday, September 10, as the deadline for nominations.
The Tamale Central by-election follows the tragic death of the area’s Member of Parliament, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who lost his life in a helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6.
His passing has left the seat vacant, prompting the upcoming poll.
