A 45-year-old Accountant and businessman, Isaac Adamah has officially kick-started his campaign bid to wrestle the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency parliamentary seat from the New Patriotic Party.
Prof. Mike Aaron Ocquaye currently occupies the seat but has announced his intention not to contest the 2012 elections, after winning two successive elections in 2004 and 2008. The NPP has elected Adwoa Sarfo to contest the seat in the 2012 elections.
Isaac Adamah who lost the 2004 contest to the Prof. Ocquaye, believes this is the opportune time for him “to take what rightfully belongs to him”.
He would however need to fend-off what appears to be one of the fiercely contested constituency primaries ever organised by the National Democratic Congress in the area, with 2008 losing candidate Zita Okaikoi, Sophia Akuoko and Isaac Affum all in the race for the slot.
Incidentally, Isaac Adamah and Zita Okaikoi who both contested the same seat with Prof. Mike Ocquaye in 2004 and 2008 respectively, secured the NDC ticket by going unopposed. This thus makes it the first time that the NDC is holding primaries to select a candidate to contest the elections in the Dome-Kwabenya constituency since its creation in 2004.
Launching his campaign in Dome on Saturday, Mr. Adamah told journalists that the contest is “a two horse race between myself and Zita, since the other two contestants are novices entering the race for the first time”.
He said he had learnt a lot from Prof. Ocquaye whom he described as his “teacher in politics”, after losing the contest to him in 2004. “Now that my teacher is bowing out of the game, I see myself as the best among his students to take over from him. Even Adwoa Sarfo whom the incumbent party has elected to contest the seat does not come close as for I am concerned,” he stated.
Mr. Adamah said issues of job creation, access to information and total development are dear to his heart, and he believes if he gets the mandate to represent the people of Dome-Kwabenya, he can play key roles to better the lives of his constituents.
He pledged to unify the party to make sure the NDC wins the Dome-Kwabenya seat for the first time as well as retain ultimate power in 2012.
The primaries are expected to be held in October, 2011.
