The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has set up a fund to cater for the youth in the party who win get injured or die during activities of the party. Known as "Heroes Fund," it will serve as insurance package for youths of the party to encourage them to go the extra mile in working hard for the party to attain its objective of winning more parliamentary seats and the presidential election with a landslide victory. A Deputy National Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr James Kofi Fonu, who announced this when he met with executives and members of the special ward of the party at Old Fadama in Agbogbloshie, Accra, said the fund was not to encourage members to engage in unlawful acts. The meeting formed part of a nation-wide outreach by the executive of the party to touch base with its foot soldiers. He explained that the Mills Administration greatly appreciated the efforts of the foot soldiers in ensuring that the party won the 2008 elections, hence the decision of the National Youth secretariat of the party to put in place measures to meet the aspirations of the youth. He said with the stability of the economy, the government would move into the generation of jobs for the youth as well as provide the needed support to those who wanted to establish their businesses. Mr Fonu noted that the party would never turn its back on the youth in NDC who served as polling agents, canvassed for votes and other activities that contributed to the party's victory and that they must be empowered to play greater roles in securing a landslide victory for the party in 2012. He said most of the policies of the current government were geared towards the development of the youth in general and gave the assurance that the benefits of such development would be so overwhelming that the opposition would have very little to complain about. He explained that the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) was not a permanent employment avenue, but a temporary arrangement, to allow the youth to prepare themselves for higher education or seek permanent jobs. Mr Fonu added that the NDC government had overridden the tradition of offering loans of higher returns to its youth, but rather equip them with good employable opportunities for self sustaining incomes. He described the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as an elitist party that sought the interest of very few in society, unlike the NDC with its social democratic tendencies would continue to implement policies and programmes that would support the poor in society. "NPP is a capitalist party, and I assure you, they will soon run away because capitalism is not implementable in Ghana", he exclaimed. Mr Fonu hailed the election of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the NPP flag bearer because the party would beat him again in a landslide victory in 2012. Source: Daily Graphic
