A member of the NDC communications team, Alhaji Halidu Haruna is calling on the leadership of his party to as a matter of urgency withdraw a law suit filed against the EC by four major political parties in Ghana, NDC, NPP, CPP and PNC over the upcoming bye-elections in Wulensi and Kwabre West constituencies.
According to him, the legal counsel for the political parties, Atta Akyea has no credibility to handle such a critical case on behalf of the parties especially “a responsible and credible party like ours (NDC)”.
General Secretaries of the four main political parties have jointly sued the Electoral Commission seeking to stop it from going ahead with by-elections in Wulensi and Kwabre West.
The parties say the EC cannot go ahead with the bye-elections called in the wake of the death of two MPs due to the absence of a valid voters register.
The EC has declared that because the new voter register is not ready, the old one will be used to conduct the two bye elections but the political parties hold a dissenting view.
Despite the law suit, chairman of the Electoral Commission claims it would go ahead with the planned Wulensi and Kwabre west constituencies’ by-elections until the court decides.
But, speaking on Asempa Fm’s current affairs Talkshow, Kukurantumi on Saturday, Alhaji Halidu Haruna noted that it is the same lawyer Atta Akyea who in 2008 attempted to stop the EC from declaring results of the elections by going to court so he lacks credibility to prosecute the case.
“If my party NDC is part of the suit then I raise objection to the lawyer of the political parties, Atta Akyea. In fact he has no credibility in anyway. In 2008, he took steps to frustrate and stampede the EC from declaring the electoral results so somebody like this, how can he represent the NDC? We should not allow it” he stressed.
He says Atta Akyea’s recent denial of a letter he wrote on behalf of African Automobile Limited (AAL) to be used as a basis for argument in the controversial $1.5bn looming judgment debt casts slur on his credibility.”
This same Atta Akyea is telling us that it is disgracing to quote from a letter he wrote on behalf of his clients, African Automobile Limited (AAL) in 2003. Look by inference, he is telling us that he lied and that nobody should take him serious because he attempted conspiring with his client to defraud the state”.
He asserted that Atta Akyea is not the only legal brain in Ghana so either he is changed or the NDC should withdraw because he has no credibility. “The man’s credibility is not something that should encourage the NDC to join the suit. I am humbly pleading with the leadership of my party to withdraw from the suit immediately if Atta Akyea is not changed”.
