The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed strong support for the recent directive issued by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) prohibiting firearms at polling stations during the 2024 general elections.

This includes a restriction on firearms carried by security personnel.

The IGP, acting as the Commander-in-Chief of the elections security task force, retains exclusive authority to authorise military intervention.

However, such action will only be considered as a last resort, ensuring that the security response remains proportionate and appropriate to the situation.

Dr Edward Omane Boamah, the NDC’s Director of Elections and IT, voiced the party’s endorsement of the directive following a police briefing.

The session included representatives from all political parties, during which security preparations for the upcoming elections were discussed.

Dr Omane Boamah reiterated the NDC's dedication to collaborating with security agencies to ensure a peaceful and orderly election process.

He emphasised that the party was keen to maintain a secure environment that would foster fair and transparent voting.

Furthermore, Dr Omane Boamah expressed confidence that security personnel would provide essential support during the special voting on December 2.

The former Communications Minister stressed the importance of a secure electoral environment for the integrity of the election and the safety of all involved.

“We are glad to know that the security agencies are saying there should be no firearms at the polling stations. That is very good and we are also gladdened to know that the military will be a last resort and because the Inspector General of Police is the head of the elections security taskforce, it is only he who can order a military intervention."

“I want to emphasise this because the IGP is the Commander-in-Chief of the election's security taskforce, it is only he who can authorise a military intervention in this election and what that does is, it places the responsibility for a military incursion on the IGP and no other person.”
