The NDC Deputy General Secretary, Mustapha Gbande, has assured of a solid collaboration with the security services to maintain peace in the country in the December 7th general elections.

He urged border security officers dispatched to protect the country’s borders ahead of Saturday’s polls to serve with integrity to safeguard the country’s peace by desisting from acting in political inclination and intimidation during the discharge of their duties.

Mr Gbande was addressing stakeholders at the Aflao Border during his Operational Border Review Tour of the Volta Region.

“We can only achieve the objective of keeping this country safe and lawful if servicemen decide to uphold the Ghana flag and not political flags”, Mr Gbande said.

He stressed that the NDC and the governing New Patriotic Party are not at war but are only engaged in politics and struggling for power to govern the country.

Therefore, security officers need not act offensively and exhibit political inclinations which may lead to supporters retaliating with violence.

“Nobody should think that he will use a police officer, an immigration officer, or a military officer to intimidate, committing political crime. It is something the NDC will not let go.

We have had such bad experiences in 2020, and we are determined our best to ensure it doesn’t repeat itself”, he said.

He extended assurances from the NDC Presidential Candidate, John Dramani Mahama indicating his readiness to adopt a collective government approach and work with every security officer regardless of political affiliations.

Mr Gbande cautioned against subverting the law with the help of security officers to maintain power instead of allowing the will of the people to manifest in the results of the polls.

He concluded by stressing that the NDC has laid surveillance on every single security officer detailed to discharge duties during the elections, promising an effective collaboration with the security to ensure sanity.

The Aflao Sector Commander of the Ghana Immigration Service, ACI Frederick Duodu emphasized that he would not allow himself to superintend over officers who would intimate voters or act against the law,

He indicated that “the officers who have been brought here, are not here to intimidate anybody. And nobody will also do that and me myself, I won’t allow it. If anybody does it, you will be sanctioned. We have been given a specific task on what to do.”

He stressed that the unapproved borders would be reinforced to prevent people from crossing into the country illegally.

The Aflao Sector Commander of the Customs Division, Assistant Commission, Joseph Alan explained that there may be instances when officers would demand identification before allowing people to cross into the country.

He said this would occur in most situations where officers are dispatched to new localities for the exercise and, hence, are not familiar with the faces of the locals, and entreated political parties to advise their supporters to cooperate with the officers.

He added all security service personnel are public servants who must deliver their mandated duties in the interest of the law.
