The Electoral Commission has declared the ruling party, National Democratic Congress (NDC), the winner of Tuesday’s bye-election held at Chereponi in the Northern Region.
After collating results from 55 polling stations, the NDC polled 8,239 votes representing 51.25% to beat its closest contender, the New Patriotic Party who had 7,416 representing 46.17%.
The NDC candidate Samuel Jabanyite has, therefore, been duly declared as the Member of Parliament-elect for the Chereponi constituency. The NPP was represented by Abubakari Aminu.
Two thousand votes were rejected and the total valid votes cast was 16,076.
The Chereponi Parliamentary seat became vacant following the death of the Member of Parliament for the area, Doris Asibi Seidu of the NPP in July.
Other results are: Rebecca Namana Jabari of People’s National Convention, 176 votes representing 0.96%; Issah Yaw of the New Vision Party, 139 of the total votes cast representing 0.87% and the Democratic People's Party’s candidate, Iliasu Fati, 106 votes representing 0.66%.
Luv FM's Elton John Brobbey reports that the main Chereponi constituency itself is calm, but NDC supporters in Tamale township have been jubilating.
