The Women Organiser of the ruling National Democratic (NDC), Anita De-sooso has described as false, Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah’s claim that he never was appointed to chair any three-man committee to resettle the Rawlingses.
She said even though there was no documentation of this appointment, the decision was reached at the Osu Castle, and Dr Spio-Grabrah did not reject the nomination.
The National Chairman of the NDC, Dr Kwabena Adjei, in reaction to Dr Spio-Grabrah’s comments that it was regrettable the party in power had failed to resettle the party’s founder, Jerry John Rawlings, 10 months after his ridge residence was burnt, accused his vice of mischief.
A statement signed by the Chairman said the “FEC [Functional Executive Committee of the NDC] is dismayed by the statement on the accommodation of the former First Family, H. E. Jerry John Rawlings and Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, alleged to have been made by Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, who is a Vice Chairman of the Party and also Chairman of the Communications Committee.”
“FEC wishes to state that Dr. Spio-Garbrah was appointed Chairman of a three-member committee set up to resolve the former first couple’s accommodation problem. Unfortunately, Dr. Spio-Gabrah left Ghana for his UK base without calling a meeting of the committee. Indeed he is yet to call a meeting of that committee.”
But Dr Spio-Grabranh countered his chairman’s position on the matter describing Dr Kwabena Adjei’s statement as a “sophisticated hoax.”
In a statement titled, “Very false that NDC has tasked Spio-Garbrah to lead 3-man committee to resolve Rawlings' house issue!”, Dr Spio-Garbrah said, “I hope that this statement allegedly put out by the Party Chairman is a sophisticated hoax, as the section quoted above is TOTALLY FALSE. I wish to state categorically, without fear of contradiction, that I have NOT been appointed the chairman of any 3-man NDC Party Committee to deal with the Rawlings House issue. Another Vice Chairman of the Party was the one appointed at a NEC meeting at the KAMA Conference Centre about two months ago, where I was present, and the important issue of why Rawlings' official accommodation problem was NOT even on the agenda to be discussed by NEC. Earlier, at another meeting of FEC, about four months ago, which I happened to Chair in the absence of the Chairman, I had raised the issue again of why this important matter was not on the agenda. Following discussion of the subject, I was part of a large party delegation which met urgently at the Castle to discuss the issue with H.E.The President and other senior Castle officials. So, yes, I have been concerned with this matter, as one of several factors which in my opinion is detracting from Party Unity, and I have tried to use all INTERNAL Party channels to have it addressed.”
Anita De-Sooso however told Joy News the party’s Vice-Chairman was deliberately misleading the public.
Asked whether Dr Spio-Garbrah accepted the nomination to chair the committee, the Women Organiser responded, “he has to. We were all there, he didn’t say no, I will not be party to it.”
The NDC Vice-Chair in his statement said, “In fact, it would have been awkward and inappropriate for the only Vice Chairman of the Party who is known to reside outside Ghana to have been appointed as Chairman of a Committee that needed to urgently address such an important matter of State which affects the Party, when there are four or five other Vice Chairmen who could have handled this matter. Indeed, closer scrutiny of the minutes of that NEC meeting, or even quiet conversations between the Chairman and some of those present at that NEC meeting would reveal that the Party Chairman has made what I consider to be simply a genuine and honest mistake if indeed he issued the statement under his signature. There is no NDC Party letter appointing me to this position with relevant Terms Of Reference, time-table or deadline to report (which is how I would expect to operate), and NO NEC resolution of the NDC giving me such an assignment! Notwithstanding my numerous human shortcomings as a human being, one thing that nobody who has known me since my birth will say is any notion that I can be given any assignment, accept it, and NOT perform that function to the best of my ability. Indeed I believe both Presidents Rawlings and President Mills will attest to that. Indeed, the Secretary General of the NDC, Mr Johnson Asiedu-Nketsia, announced (to my surprise) to the only FEC meeting that I happened to Chair in 2010, as referred to above, that it was "the best managed meeting since he became Secretary General of the Party," to applause by some FEC members. Several FEC members after that meeting also privately congratulated me on my performance.”
