Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom has vowed the political party he intends to outdoor in February 2012 will be attractive and different from the litany of parties that went under soon after their formation.
The National Reform Party, the United Ghana Movement, United Renaissance Party, the New Vision Party, Democratic Freedom Party and a host of others saw very little life and failed to break into the realm of being considered major forces to reckon with, with the parties currently on hibernation or on the verge of being cannibalized altogether.
But Paa Kwesi Nduom, guest of Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, a day after confirming his widely rumoured exit from the Convention People’s Party which he led as presidential candidate in the 2008 general elections, said he and his colleagues are focused on their agenda and have the risks well measured already.
No, the party will not go the way of the others but stay, he told host Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, explaining among other desires that the party will emerge as an alternative to the National Democratic Congress and New Patriotic Party and show a clear difference in governance.
“Let me first say that we admit that we are doing something that is very difficult; we are doing something there will be many people who will want to discourage us; we are doing something some may consider to be impossible; but we are doing something that we know is worthwhile. We are doing something that we believe in and so we will work hard at it. We will sacrifice quite a bit to make it stay and to make it grow and we will use kind words, we will be respectful of people and we will take other people’s differing opinions and not engage in insulting behaviour or disrespectful behaviour in any way. We want Ghanaians to see us as the alternative and we also, as I said earlier, we don’t want to be seen as anybody’s splinter group, as anybody’s breakaway group, that it is something new, and it is not just borne out of dissatisfaction, that it is borne out of seeing an opportunity…”, he explained.
The results he seeks to achieve ultimately – a platform or avenue of influence to help shape the direction of the country – he said, he could not achieve at the CPP, and it didn’t seem to him and his colleagues things were going to get any better.
“Kojo you know I have said a number f times that public service is an honourable thing, but government also is something serious, it must be done with all sincerity and by serious people willing to make a sacrifice for the benefit of others. Where I was, I worked hard. I invested, not just money, time and also opportunity in life, my own time, business and so on… and tried to do the best that I could, it didn’t get me the result that I needed and it didn’t get the group I was with the result that we needed and its time, I believe, to find a group, find a collective, find an avenue, through which this honourable thing – public service – can happen and it can happen, I’m not just talking about me becoming president or me becoming a minister of anything like that, but having influence so that we can help shape the direction of the country, that’s what I’m looking forward to and that is what many of us working together are looking forward to.”
