Aspiring flagbearer of the Convention People’s Party, Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom says the nation's leaders must propose a proactive plan to avert future floods, instead of touring flood hit areas and sympathizing with victims. Some parts of Accra and Tema experienced more rains Thursday morning, a day after torrential downpour caused severe flooding in the capital and other parts of the country.President J.E.A Mills toured some parts of the city to get first hand information of the situation and assured victims of government support.Nine people have been confirmed dead as a rescue team of soldiers and NADMO officials saved about 240 victims trapped in their rooms and on roof tops. Some victims of the floods passed the night with friends and family since they lost homes through the flood.NADMO Coordinator, Kofi Porturphy, who has been assessing the situation, told Joy News distribution of relief items began last night. But Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom is unimpressed with the handling of the situation so far.He told Joy FM’s Isreal Laryea in an interview that :“…it is about time that we stopped just being sympathizers, it is about time that we stopped giving condolences to those who have lost their lives…It is about time that we stopped being reactive…”He said most localities in Accra and Tema that got flooded as a result of heavy rains on Tuesday night were once river courses and therefore proposed that a national initiative to restore those water bodies is put in place.Alternatively, he noted, there was the need “to figure out what we can do to ensure the water courses are taken care of proactively.”
“It is about time that we once and for all, say to all of us that enough, enough of reaction; let us start now looking ahead that we are in this situation and it is not good,” he encouraged.
