The leader of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom is asking President Mills to back his peace messages with action because mere words cannot ensure peace.According to him, President Mills cannot talk about ensuring peace in the 2012 general elections while his spokespersons and appointees are engaged in acts which cause disturbances in the country.President Mills at any given opportunity iterates his government’s commitment to peace before, during and after the 2012 elections.Addressing the nation at the 55th independence anniversary celebration in Accra, President Mills reiterated his commitment as Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces to ensure that the country remains peaceful, before, during, and after this year’s election.This is among many assurances to Ghanaians that the election will be peaceful. But Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom believes it should not be about mere words but action.Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii-Sen on Wednesday in reaction to the president’s statement, Dr. Nduom noted that peaceful elections will be actualized if he checks the actions of his appointees which sometimes lead to disturbances.“I have no problem about Mills’ statement but what I am asking is that what has he (Mills) done to his appointees and spokespersons who inflame passions. Sometimes you hear some of his appointees jump on radio and attack other people. These petty issues can spark a lot of violence in the country so the president must check it”.He said some issues such as abuse of incumbency could also bring about violence so the president should ensure his appointees do not use their power to intimidate his opponents. “Have we also addressed the issue of abuse of incumbency? I think this is what President Mills must check. In 2008, votes in Ashanti, Volta and Central regions were bloated and nothing has been done about it. All these are lingering issues that must be addressed but not mere sayings”.Nduom bemoaned what he said was the lackadaisical attitude of various political leaders in ensuring peace in the country. "In 2008 people's houses were razed down but both Nana Addo and President Mills failed to visit the area because they were not committed to peace. I went to the area to console the people and preached about peace so peace in Ghana must start from the political leaders”.He admonished political parties to, as part of the peace process, expose their own people who engage in acts which plunge the nation into chaos than waiting till security agencies act.” All presidential candidates should check their actions and that of their supporters. If we all can punish our own people who engage in violence and foul language, the peace will be sought easily, either than that we will be talking in vain”.
