Negotiations aimed at resolving the three week strike by railway workers have hit a dead end for the second time in two weeks. Not even the intervention of the National Labour Commission (NLC) was enough to move the workers from their entrenched position. The leadership of the workers walked out of the meeting fuming. They accused the NLC of pronouncing judgement without recourse to their proposals. The workers said they had been cheated for far too long and that they were no longer prepared to accept that situation. They say as long as the management of the Ghana Railway Company remained at post the strike would continue. The Minister of Ports Harbours and Railways, Prof. Christopher Ameyaw Akumfi told Joy News that the government will look into the allegations leveled by the workers against the management. He said the workers had petitioned the president through him and gave the assurance that the issues raised in the petition will be carefully considered.Meanwhile the NLC said the workers must resume work because the strike was illegal. The commission said it may go to court to compel the workers to go back to work.Railway workers have been on strike for the past three weeks to back demands for their unpaid salaries and improved conditions of service. Some of the striking worker picked and flogged two of their colleagues who defied the strike and went to work.
