The Tertiary Education Workers Union (TEWU) an ffiliate of the Trades Union Congress, has praised the new minimum wage increase. The General Secretary of the Union, Daniel Ayim Antwi described it as one of the highest over the years, and an improvement on last year’s 17 percent increase. He told Adom News that the increase can go a long way to improve salaries of workers. The National Tripartite Committee, after weeks of stalled negotiations, announced the new increment from the previous GHC3.11 to GHC3.73.The wage increase follows a 30 percent upward review of prices of petroleum prices last month, with an attendant increase in transport fares, putting burden on workers' wages. However, Mr. Ayim Antwi hinted that the Union will bargain for a higher percentage when the time comes for negotiating for the single spine salary.Meanwhile, leadership of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) and the Ghana Employers Association, have both expressed their satisfaction with the new wage level.TUC General Secretary, Kofi Asamoah said the negotiations was characterised by painstaking analysis before they arrived at the 20 percent figure.Story by Maame Esi Nyamekye Thompson/Adom News
