Aide to ex-president John Mahama has reiterated the NDC’s stance that there is no need to compile a new voters’ register ahead of the December general elections.
Joyce Bawa Mogtari said the current register is credible and the Electoral Commission should rather focus on a limited registration.
Speaking to Kojo Yankson Friday on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, the former Deputy Transport Minister said it does not make financial sense to compile a fresh register.
“Do we even need [a new register], is it expedient? Is it economically viable? Is it a priority? That's why the NDC says, simply no [to it],” Mogtari said.
The NDC communicator was speaking after the Supreme Court set June 23 to deliver judgment on the dispute over the new register.
The NDC withdrew its relief seeking to stop the EC from compiling the register and relied on the second relief which would force the EC to accept the old voter IDs as primary document to enroll on the new one.
But the EC argues the current register is flawed and must be changed.
Allowing the use of the current IDs as primary document would defeat the purpose for changing the roll, the EC said in its argument for disallowing the old IDs.

Backing the need for a new register, Deputy Information Minister, Pius Enam Hadzide who also spoke on the Super Morning Show said people opposed to change always find excuses to justify same.
He cited the change from opaque ballot boxes and use of black and white IDs and the switch to a biometric system to back his claims.
Mr Hadzide said in all these instances, there were claims of financial sense and the need for it.
