A special aide to the President, Nii Lantey Vanderpuije, is pessimistic about the ability of the newly elected executives of the New Patriotic Party to inspire confidence in the Ghanaian voter.
According to him, almost all the executives elected at the delegates’ conference over the weekend have questionable traits that would create doubts in the minds of the people.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates’ conference was held last Saturday at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
It was under the theme, "Reflect, Rebuild and Recapture".
When the election was over, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey beat his closest challenger, Stephen Ntim and three others - Dr Charles Wereko-Brobby, Felix Owusu Agyapong and Sammy Crabbe - to become the newly elected Chairman of the party.
General Secretary Nana Ohene Ntow was also unseated by lawyer Owusu Afriyie popularly called 'Sir John'.
The National Organizer slot went to Alhaji Moctar Bamba and the National Women's Organiser position went to Otiko Afisah Djaba with Anthony Karbo winning the National Youth Organiser slot.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Monday, Mr Vanderpuije explained that a candidate like Jake Obetsebi Lamptey is not really identifiable with Gas – he cannot even speak the language - and so cannot claim to possess the capacity to win votes from Accra for his party as he noted in his address to the delegates. He also pointed out certain misunderstandings between the former tourism minister and the Ga youths.
Mr Vanderpuije raised issues about the credibility of other personalities like Alhaji Bamba, alleging that he was involved in thievery and asked to resign from the previous government.
In his view, the executives are simply not credible to lead the NPP.
But Ms Ursula Owusu, an NPP die-hard, who was a co-panelist on the programme was confident that with the new breed of executives, the NPP is going to wrest power from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
She called for the support of all members of the party - winners and losers alike - to rally behind the executives to ensure they achieve the ultimate goal of the party.
