Newmont has denied responsibility for recent pollution reports affecting the Tano River in the Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo Region, where its Ahafo North mine operates.
In a press release, the company said some reports have “wrongly and unfortunately” attributed pollution of the river to its mining activities.
Following the claims, Newmont said it is cooperating fully with relevant stakeholders to conduct field visits and investigations into its operations and environmental management practices. Investigations undertaken so far have included interviews, site inspections, and reviews of company documents.
One investigation was jointly conducted by the Water Resources Commission (WRC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), while a separate assessment involved youth leaders and Assemblymen from the mine’s host communities.
“The youth leaders and Assemblymen… have publicly published their observations, essentially noting that they found no evidence of Newmont’s operations impacting the Tano River,” the release said.
Newmont stressed that its operational activities meet the highest environmental and water management standards, often exceeding legal requirements.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to responsible mining and said it will continue to cooperate with investigative bodies looking into the Tano River pollution.
“Newmont wishes to state, without equivocation, that its operational activities do not pollute the Tano River,” the release said.
The company said it remains dedicated to environmental protection and sustainable development in the Tano North Municipality.
