The Ghana Police Service says a dawn operation jointly carried military and police personnel in Budumburam in the Central region Thursday, led to the arrest of 141 suspected criminals.
All the suspects, including 15 females, have been sent to the Police Headquarters in Accra, for screening
The team comprising about 400 military officers and 200 police officers, swooped down on the Central region town, which has gained notoriety for violent crimes in recent times.
Two traffic police officers – Sergeant Michael Dzamesi and Lance Corporal Mohammed Awal – were shot and killed two weeks ago by a gang, when they were accosted after refusing to heed to a signal to stop.
This week, a sub-chief at Gomoa Akranmang, Nana Yaw Egyir, was gruesomely murdered by a mob allegedly over disagreements in a disputed land.
A statement issued by the Public Affairs Directorate of the Police Service says the exercise, which is “part of efforts to ensure total security in the country,” shall be replicated nationwide.
