“Choosing a Vice Presidential nominee is no light task,” said CPDA founder Dr. Etse Sikanku.

The Center for Public Discourse has announced that it will launch its first ever Vice presidential Permutations Forum with the intent to improve the Vice presidential selection process in time for the 2020 elections.

The forum will convene on Wednesday, April 17 at the Ghana Institute of Journalism to discuss standards, best practices and recommendations in the chase to run alongside NDC flagbearer John Mahama next year.

Political communications analyst, consultant and author, Dr. Etse Sikanku, will spearhead the discussion, and will aim to answer the following questions:

1) Who is in the run and who is most likely to become John Mahama’s running mate?

2) Has current Vice President Mahamadu Bawumia changed the role or notion of the Vice presidency?

3) What are the key qualities needed for the position of Vice President?

4) Is Ghana ready for a female Vice President?

“Choosing a Vice Presidential nominee is no light task,” said Sikanku, who is also the CPDA’s Chief Discourse Analyst. “It’s a weighty decision with consequences for the party and the nation. That is why we should be involved in the public discourse surrounding the selection of a key political position.”

The forum is a novel idea, according to a CPDA press statement released to media Tuesday morning. It is an event that is the first of its kind in Ghanaian democracy and it hopes to serve as a barometer of setting public discourse on a position that will be momentous for the future of the nation, the statement continues.

“Deliberation, discourse, speech, media and communication are seen as an essential part of our democracy,” Sikanku added. “Indeed the quality of this discourse is critical to the growth of our democracy and that’s why such a forum is being held.”

Scores of influential experts, analysts and strategists will participate in the forum including: Head of the Political Desk at JoyNews, Evans Mensah; Head of Current Affairs and Politics at Citi FM, Godfred Akoto Boafo; Development Consultant and Democracy Engineer, Nansata Yakubu; Director for Advocacy and Policy Engagement at the Ghana Center for Democratic Development, Kojo Asante and Professor of Political Science at the University of Ghana, Yaw Gyampo.
