A 21-year-old suspected armed robber has been injured in a shootout with police officers on escort duty at Gbongbonduri near Tuna in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region.

Three others, who are said to be herdsmen are currently on the run and are being pursued by the regional police command.

In a telephone interview with JoyNews, ASP Degraft Armah Adjei of the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba Divisional Command said, attacks on private and commercial vehicles by armed robbers have been rampant in the area.

This he said has been giving his men sleepless nights.

He said measures were subsequently put in place to protect motorists and other commercial drivers, which led to the attacks shifting to operators of cargo trucks.

He said luck eluded the armed robbers when personnel escorting a cargo truck from Tuna to Sawla, encountered the four suspected armed robbers who opened fire on them around the outskirts of Gbongbonduri.

“The police also returned fire and Yakubu Musah who is a resident of Tuna was shot.

"His right thigh got injured and he is currently on admission at the Sawla Hospital under police guard. His single-barreled gun was also retrieved,” he said.

ASP Degraft Armah Adjei assured motorists of their safety saying they are ready to weed out criminals from the area.
