The municipal health directorate for Tarkwa Nsuaem, Caroline Eshun- Otoo says her municipality, has made history in the referrals system of the Ghana Health Service with the donation of ambulances to two of it hospitals by the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation.
She said the municipality has the highest fleet of new ambulances in the Western Region and comparably in most Regions in the country.
"We are the only municipality with five new fleets of the ambulances in the country and this means a lot to our referral system," she said.
"These robust ambulances donated by Gold Fields Ghana Foundation will reduce maternal and neonatal deaths the municipality is battling with as well as other emergencies that need swift referrals," she added.
General Manager Tarkwa Mine, Stephen Osei-Bempah during the handing over ceremony of the ambulances said the donation was in fulfillment of a pledge made by the Executive Vice President and Head of Gold Fields West Africa Alfred Baku last year.
At the sod-cutting ceremony of the reconstruction of the Tarkwa and Abosso (TNA) Park into an international standard stadium on February 19, 2019, the MP, George Mireku Duker made an appeal to Gold Fields to assist the Municipal Health Directorate with an ambulance to aid healthcare delivery.
"We are here today, honouring the promise that was made last year," he said.
Mr Osei-Bempah said the presentation is just one of many interventions by Gold Fields to improve healthcare delivery in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem and Prestea Huni-Valley municipalities, which host their Tarkwa and Damang mines.
"Since Gold Fields employs over 69% of its workforce from the host communities, providing health support to our communities simply means that we are taking care of our own.
"In line with our shared-value initiative, we will continue to complement governments efforts in development of our host communities.
He urged administrators of the Apinto Government Hospital and the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Hospital who received the brand new, fully equipped Mercedes Benz ambulances, which cost $248,000 to put to good use for the maximum benefit of the community members.
Pleading with the administrators to put in place a maintenance plan to ensure that the ambulances remain in condition and serve the community for many years.
Member of Parliament for Tarkwa-Nsuaem George Mireku Duker lauded Gold Fields for their continuous support for the people of Tarkwa Nsuaem and beyond.
"We will ask and Gold fields will never turn their back, they will always be there for you, Gold fields will be grateful.
"Fortunately, I serve on the trust fund board of Gold Fields and anytime we meet and make a request they don't turn my request down and I'm so humbled," he said.
He said the commendation of the mining giant in the Western Region isn't a fallacy because there are tangible projects of the mines to show.
