Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, James Agalga

The Minority in Parliament has condemned what it described as the rambo-style arrest of the self-acclaimed pastor who threatened to kill the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa.

Apostle Kwabena Owusu Adjei who was arrested by the National Security Operatives yesterday has subsequently been remanded by an Accra Circuit court.

He was charged with ‘threat of death’, ‘offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace’ and ‘possession of narcotics’.

But addressing the press in Parliament, the Minority Spokesperson on Defence and Interior, James Agatha condemned the tactics used by the officials.

He added that the National Security Operatives who effected the arrest breached the rights of the suspect.

“These are worrying times for the country. I think the government has chosen a certain path which is aimed at intimidating people who speak out in protest against the dangerous path that they have chosen to take all of us.

“Therefore as the Minority, we want to, in no uncertain terms condemn and denounce the actions of the Security Operatives who effected the arrest of the Apostle yesterday” he stated.

James Agalga also accused the security agencies and the government of selectivity in the arrest of the Apostle, Bernard Mornah and the Rtd Osahene Boakye Gyan.

He questioned why the NPP’s Deputy General Secretary, Nana Obiri Boahene has not been invited by the security for making similar comments.

"There appears to be some amount of selectivity when it comes to dealing with matters of this nature," he said.

Mr Agalga claimed that the president’s human right credentials has diminished due to the constant harassment of his political opponents and intimidation by the government.

He, however, emphasised that the officials in opposition parties will not be intimidated over the harassment by the government.
