The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has denied claims that the Electoral Commission called for an IPAC meeting to discuss the exclusion of the existing voters’ identification card before submitting the Constitution Instrument (CI) to Parliament.
This comes after General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu alleged that the NDC boycotted an IPAC meeting scheduled to discuss the new CI.
But the NDC Director of Election, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah at a press conference on Thursday described the allegations as untrue.
He argued that EC submitted the new CI to Parliament eight days before the scheduled date for the said IPAC meeting.
He further questioned the rationale behind excluding the existing voters’ ID as part of the requirement for the new register adding that this could cause chaos.
“We are heading towards danger,” he warned.
“We are in a global world and we have seen what has happened in our neighbouring countries. They all had disputes and the foundation for these disputes was electoral registers. We are not saying that is the future of Ghanaians that is why we are talking about it today,” he added.
The Elections Director also stresed that the National Identification Authority (NIA) together with the EC are scheming to rig the 2020 polls for the governing NPP.
Noting that elections are not rigged only on the elections day but from the moment the EC tries to disenfranchise eligible voters.
“The wish wash responses of the EC, NIA and the NPP to issues we have raised, further exposes the criminal conspiracy between these entities to disenfranchise million eligible voters and subvert the will of the people.
“But the people of this country are discerning and vigilant and will not allow this attempt to undermine the integrity of this years’ general election and for that matter our democracy."
