Former President John Dramani Mahama says the media has given the ruling New Patriotic Party a free ticket when it comes to corruption.
This, he explained, is because the media has failed to hold President Akufo-Addo and his government accountable.
“The media is supposed to set the agenda. The way the media held us up to accountability is not the way it is holding this government up to accountability,” he said.
He made the comments in an exclusive interview with three hosts from the Multimedia group.
During the interview, he accused the media of some bias against his government, insisting that the standard of accountability held against his government has fallen during the Akufo-Addo administration.
This, for him, accounts for the Akufo-Addo-led government’s failure in dealing effectively with corruption in the country.
“The media has raised a lot of scandals about this government but has failed to get to the bottom of them.
“As I earlier mentioned, the media sets the agenda and so if you want Ghana to discuss corruption, we can discuss it the way we did in 2016 but now, it’s not like a more important issue to anybody.
“But of course, as a media man I’m sure you’ll be disappointed at the way government has handled corruption,” he told the hosts.
He further stated that corruption is bound to happen in every government, however, it is the duty of the President to ensure that corruption cases are dealt with ruthlessly and the persons involved brought to book, which, he believes the Akufo-Addo government has failed at.
“Prosecuting corruption cases from the previous government is the easiest way to fight corruption but the real corruption fight is dealing with the rots in your government and prosecuting those found guilty.
“That is the mark of courage in the fight against corruption,” he added.
He also asked President Akufo-Addo to resign for failing to uproot galamsey in the country as he promised.
Mr Mamaha said President Akufo-Addo put his presidency on the line with a commitment to end illegal mining known as galamsey in the country, however, has failed abysmally in the fight.
So, “he should be resigning by now,” he said.
