A human rights non-governmental organisation, the Corporate Social Responsibility Movement (CRUS), has filed a writ at the Accra High Court (Human Rights Division) against Pioneer Food Cannery Limited (PALOCZ) and the Global Haulage Company to compel them to stop activities which could destroy the aquatic life of Chemu Lagoon and pollute its surrounding areas.The CRSM is also seeking a court order to direct the Environmental Protection Authority to employ its powers under the EPA Act 490, 1994 and the Environmental Assessment Regulation 1990(LI 1652) to compel the PFCL and the Global Haulage to comply with the enactments.In its statement of claim, CRSM prayed the court to also direct the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) to play its role effectively to stop the operations of the two companies which could have negative consequences on the lagoon and its surrounding areas.The CRSM also expressed concern about the continued construction of an offal recycling plant by the Pioneer Food Cannery without requisite permits or licences, including building and fire permits prior to commencement of the said project.The statement said the project had channelled the hazardous waste line from the plant into the pumping station three, which will directly and finally dump the waste into the Chemu Lagoon, a situation which would have deleterious effect on the ‘aqua and fauna life ‘in the lagoon.The CRSM also averred that the Global Haulage Company was also undertaking a reclamation exercise which would in future result in extensive flooding and eventually dislocate settlements surrounding the Chemu Lagoon.The writ filed on behalf of the NGO by Atuguba and Associates in Accra further prayed the court to give an order of perpetual injunction to restrain the two companies from continuing with their actions.
