Two NGOs have written to the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice CHRAJ (CHRAJ) protesting compulsory religious worship in some public schools.
The Network of Muslim Organizations and Innovative Teachers in separate petitions to the commission noted that the practice of forcing Muslim students to attend church services is unlawful and must be stopped.
President of Innovative Teachers, Stephen Desu, told Joy News Ghana is a secular state and the practice smacks of hypocrisy on the part of the Ghana Education Service.
"GES and the Ministry of Education are reluctant to deal with the matter that the constitution obliges them to, such as ensuring human rights in our schools and we think that it smacks of constitutional hypocrisy and has a propensity of causing conflicts in our country," he said.
He argued issues about religion must be optional and not compulsory.
“A Muslim student or students of any other religious faith who wish to pray or read the Qur'an or any other religious texts must be allowed to do so because Ghana is a secular state and not a religious state," he stated.
