Over the years, several countries, including Ghana, have expressed concern about the total dominance of Nigerian content on local radio and televisions.

While countries like Kenya have called for a total ban on Nigerian music on their airways, another concern other African countries raise is the dominance of Nigerian content on pay television platforms DStv and GOtv.

MutiChoice, owners of DStv and GOtv, has attributed the situation to the availability of Nigerian content whilst same cannot be said of countries like Ghana.

Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu, Regional Director, M-Net West Africa answering a question from Myjoyonline.com on the issue said Nigeria produces more content that meets the standards of MultiChoice.

Content on MultiChoice’s platform, particularly West Africa, is “driven by Nigeria because of what is available,” she explained.

Answering the question at the MultiChoice Africa’s Media Round Table Wednesday, as part of activities lined up for this year’s MultiChoice Africa Content Showcase Extravaganza in Mauritius, she said her outfit has been engaging Ghanaian producers to increase the country’s content on DStv and GOtv.

MultiChoice has over the past year engaged content providers in Ghana on the standard of movies, series, music videos and other productions that meet the pay television provider’s requirements.

“We also nurture the local suppliers in Ghana… to build a great content that we can also showcase on our channels,” the M-Net West Africa boss said.

Wangi added that “We buy content that is available and we buy content across West Africa and we do have Ghanaian suppliers that we work with and as long as we begin to see content coming out of the regions, they come to us, we will acquire.”

She assured that, considering the structures they have put in place, there will more Ghanaian content on their platform as the years go by.

The 2015 MultiChoice Africa Content Showcase Extravaganza kicked off Tuesday night with a magical event filled with #OnlyTheBest of African entertainment.

The star-studded event, which is the second edition, kicked off with guests walking down the African media Walk of Fame onto a red-carpet that opened up to a sensational night of dazzling entertainment. 

The event, dubbed 'Night of a Thousand Stars' saw all the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, Bollywood and Nollywood come to life, as guests that include Genevieve Nnaji, Rita Dominic, Desmond Elliot and Ramsey Nouah were given the full movie-star treatment.

The event witnessed exciting performances from Flavour, Stonebwoy and The Mavins.

The MultiChoice Africa Content Showcase is a dynamic 5-day content extravaganza, which sees a host of DStv’s biggest channels, including Sony, SuperSport, Zee TV, A+E, Disney, MTV Base, BET, Comedy Central, BBC and M-Net previewing their latest and greatest content, soon to be seen across the video entertainment services provider’s platforms.
