A 15-member delegation from Nigeria is in Ghana on a week-long study tour of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The visit by the Nigerian team comes after similar tours by Ethiopia and Benin.
Nigeria operates a national health insurance system but the delegation is looking to learn from Ghana’s experiences to enhance their system.
Leader of the Nigerian delegation, Senator Chris Ngige, who is also the Senate Chairman of the Committee on Health - Nigerian Assembly, said Nigeria wants to learn from Ghana’s successes and challenges and also adapt and adopt lessons from how Ghana has been able to successfully implement the social health insurance model.
Ag Deputy Chief Executive of the NHIA, Nathaniel Otoo welcomed the delegation and expressed NHIA’s preparedness to share experiences with the delegation.
Officials of the NHIA on Tuesday, June 11, took the Nigerian delegation through some major themes including the structure of the NHIS, NHIS scheme operations and clinical audit.
Claims processing, provider payment mechanisms and provider relations are the other areas to be covered during the tour. The team will also visit a number of NHIA accredited facilities and installations.
The delegation’s visit comes at a time the scheme has seen an increase in its active membership, experiencing increased utilisation and also piloting a new payment mechanism, capitation.
