The new Nkonsontuano of the Ashanti Kingdom, Nana Oteng Barima Kusi II, has sworn the oath of allegiance to the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at a colourful ceremony at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
The Palace was filled to capacity with all present clad in black traditional clothes during the short ceremony.
Nana Oteng Barima Kusi II succeeds the late Nana Amponsah Antwi II who passed away last year.
The new Nkonsontuanohene and also chief of Asuminya near Barekese in the Ashanti Region is known in private life as Dr Kwaku Oteng Owusu.
He is a former student of the Prempeh College in Kumasi, continued his studies in Germany and the United Kingdom. In addition to the Ashanti Twi dialect and English, he speaks also fluent German.

Prior to the swearing in, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, asked for loyalty, dedication and honesty from the new Nkonsontuanohene.
The Asantehene noted that educating the youth was one of his major concerns of the kingdom’s developmental agenda. He therefore urged Nana Oteng Barima Kusi II to use his acquired skills in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to transform and promote the development of ICT education in the Region.
He added that the late Nkonsontuanohene served the Golden Stool and the Kumasi Traditional Council with dedication, honesty and ensure that justice was done to all manner of people.
Shortly after Nana Oteng Barima Kusi II had sworn the oath, there was jubilation among his followers, who started sprinkling powder on themselves as a sign of victory as fontonfrom drums throbbed in the background.
The new chief was then led to exchange greetings with Asantehehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and other chiefs from the various kontire. He was then carried in a palanquin and paraded through the streets from Manhyia to Ashanti New Town.
