The Daily Guide newspaper says the National Media Commission (NMC)’s plan to intervene in inappropriate use of language on media would be a huge task.

According to an Editorial Wednesday, the Commission is bound to face key challenges in its quest to sanitise the airwaves.

The NMC has planned to end the use of intemperate language on the airwaves and other media content ahead of the general elections later this year.

The NMC seeks to establish monitoring centers in Accra and the Ashanti region with support from the European Union (EU) as checkpoints for media stations.

This is to prevent further inappropriate utterances from media houses, whether by hosts, panelists or listeners who take part in the phone-in segment.

According to the Editorial, the NMC is currently faced severe logistical challenges, noting that although the Commission has the support from the EU, it might not be sufficient in carrying out the task.

Furthermore, the newspaper holds, the NMC would be seen as working against freedom of expression and freedom of the press.

At a press conference on Monday, the NMC highlighted the alarming use of intemperate language a situation it says has become a worrying.

The NMC cites instances where callers during phone-in segments raise insults at highly profiled persons as a way of addressing issues.
