Three weeks after torrential rains devastated parts of the Upper East, Upper West and Northern regions, 9 districts in the Northern Region are yet to receive any relief.A team of UN and government officials and civil society organizations are touring the 9 districts to ascertain the extent of damage caused by the rains and the immediate needs of the people.Government is seeking international humanitarian assistance and food supply from the United Nations and other international bodies.Meanwhile the French Government is offering the Government of Ghana two helicopters to help in the relief assessment and delivery efforts. The two choppers are manned by French military personnel and are presently in the three regions ferrying officials across areas cut off by the floods.Officials of the French Embassy in Accra are hopeful the choppers will help officials reach areas difficult to access in their effort to determine what reliefs would be needed by the affected people. The helicopters are also expected to transport United Nations and European Union officials who are also in the area to assess the extent of the problem, and would be expected to return to France after Thursday. However the Embassy says the two choppers could have their stay in the country extended if the Government of Ghana made a case for it.
