The Ghana Police Service has activated a massive security operation across all 16 regions to safeguard the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries, scheduled for today, Saturday, January 31, 2026.

In a decisive briefing ahead of the polls, the law enforcement body confirmed that "comprehensive security arrangements" are now in place, with thousands of personnel dispatched to over 275 constituency voting centres and national collation points.

The deployment comes amid high tensions as the party prepares to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

The security strategy involves a multi-layered approach combining high-visibility patrols and specialised tactical units.

According to the police command, rapid response teams have been strategically "positioned to respond promptly to any security situation that may arise."

Recently, the Central North Regional Police Command underscored this readiness by completing a three-day intensive high-risk tactical training for 80 security officers specifically tailored for the exigencies of this primary. These officers will join the national pool to enforce "strict access control measures" at voting venues.

The Police Service has issued a clear appeal for cooperation, urging party supporters and delegates to adhere strictly to the electoral rules. To facilitate real-time reporting of incidents, the following emergency protocols have been highlighted:

  • Toll-Free Emergency Lines: Dial 191 (accessible from all networks) or 112.
  • On-Site Reporting: Locate the nearest officer on duty or visit the local police station immediately.
  • Visibility: Expect intensified mobile and static patrols in and around the "surrounding areas" of all designated voting centres.

The Ghana Police Service reaffirmed its "constitutional mandate of protecting lives and property", stressing that the security apparatus will remain neutral.

This follows earlier cautions from the NPP leadership against the presence of unauthorised national security operatives, with the police being the sole authorised agency for election day security.

“The Police Service remains committed to its constitutional mandate... and maintaining peace and security throughout the country,” the official briefing concluded.
