Communities in the Volta Region will soon achieve the open-defecation-free status with the introduction of a new toilet technology that allows faecal matter to be used as a manure on farms after two years.

This was revealed by the Ho Central Municipal Planning Officer, Mr Cornelius  Fugah, in an interview with Joy News.

He was speaking initiatives to improve sanitation and end open defecation in some communities in the  Ho Municipality.

According to him, the technology which was launched in collaboration with the LAHTI University of Finland is aimed at ensuring that every household and school in the Ho Municipal Assembly has access to good, portable toilet facility.

According to him, the toilet is a urine-divert dry-toilet which allows human waste to be used on farms as manure.

He revealed further that about 14 communities and 6 institutions in the Ho Central Municipality have adopted the technology.

Mr Fugah has, however, urged districts in other regions to adopt the technology and urged the government to invest in the technology.

He was of the view that mass adoption of the technology will aid the fight against open defecation.

Municipal Engineer, Francis Geye, said the technology is the first in the country and is very affordable and easy to use and maintain.

One of the students from the University of Applied Sciences in Finland, Teemu  Hayrinen,  who constructed  the toilets said it is very necessary that Government of Ghana take a critical look at the technology and invest in its construction in every community in the country.

Teemu Hayrinen noted that communities with the toilet technology are now living a healthier life.

It costs about €400 to construct one toilet and is sponsored by Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The technology, unlike the KVIP, does not produce odours and allows urine to be separated from the faeces.
