Mr Kingsford Anane-Asare, a businessman and citizen of Offinso resident in Accra, who claims to be an activist of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has announced his resignation and subsequent defection to the National Democratic Congress.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Offinso, Mr Anane-Asare accused the NPP of failing to live up to electioneering campaign promises it made in 2004.
He alleged that many top members of the NPP have amassed wealth and were dissipating huge sums of money in their quest to become the party's presidential candidate while majority of hard working foot soldiers were poor.
"I am not happy with the huge sums being displayed by the NPP aspirants in their campaigns and my fear is that this could harm our fledgling democracy.
"While majority of Ghanaians find it difficult to make ends meet, a few of these party members are living in affluence and are spending huge sums of money on their presidential ambitions", he added.
Mr Anane-Asare admitted that the NPP government achieved some successes in the economic sector but condemned what he termed wanton display of wealth by some members in their bid to win power.
