Members of the Asante Akyem South constituency of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have expressed shock and disappointment at the resignation of their Chairman, Lawyer Asante Boateng, who they say had set his eyes on the parliamentary seat of the party.
According to them, they were surprised that their chairman, who fought tooth and nail to lead the constituency just about eight months ago, had resigned without informing party elders in the constituency.
A former Chairman of the constituency, Christian Agyei Kusi in an interview with Today wondered why someone who had been elected as constituency chairman in the wake of several promises could just leave within that short period without achieving anything for the party.
“He made several promises and that's why the people voted for him to become the chairman and just eight months you have dumped the party without serving for even one term; my brother this has become a big problem for the constituency.
“…if you knew the stress and trouble we went through before he (referring to Lawyer (Boateng) became the chairman, you would understand those of us who feel disappointed.
“Now we have to look for some money to conduct another election when we need money for several other things," he passionately decried.
Mr. Agyei Kusi, also known as 'Nana Oboanipa', noted that delegates in the constituency who feel so deceived have vowed never to cooperate with him in any other position he may gun for in the future.
Referring to a recent interview Lawyer Boateng granted Kumasi-based Kessben FM, Mr. Agyei Kusi said the chairman had been disloyal to the NPP by inferring that things were not transparent in the party.
He was reported to have told listeners that he had resigned as chairman because he wanted to vie for the parliamentary seat of the constituency. .
But this, Nana Oboanipa had serious reservations with, since according to him, Lawyer Boateng had created serious disunity amongst party members in the area and therefore cannot be a good representative of the people in parliament:
"We were expecting him to rather unite the party members in this constituency whom 'he had created divisions and not to tell us that he wants to be our parliamentary candidate for 20 l2. Who does he expects to come and continue the shoddy work he did in the constituency," he indicated.
He noted that most of the issues he raised in the said interview on Kessben Fm were lies since he was not known in the constituency until the former chairman bulldozed his way through to make him (Lawyer Asante) the chairman.
"If he really wants to serve the party and the constituency well as he claims, the best place to be is the chairmanship position, through which the people will know he is really serving them," he said.
