The opposition New Patriotic Party has played down reports of widespread irregularities in the ongoing polling station elections across the country. According to the party’s director of communications, Kweku Kwarteng, the elections were generally peaceful, with minor hitches in some of the centres. Media reports have been rife over some irregularities across the country, citing the boycott of the elections in Cape Coast. In the Tema West constituency of the party, the deputy chairman, Dr. Martin Antwi called for the annulment of the elections over alleged teething corruption of the system. But in an interview with Joy News’ Bernard Saibu on Tuesday, Mr. Kwarteng said the alleged irregularities were an exception and not the rule. “We are having 21,006 polling station and executive elections. The majority of them have happened neatly and very peacefully,” he said. “The impression must not be created that there is problem all over the place.” He admitted though that some few areas may have some challenges but was quick to add the party hierarchy will use the “internal party grievance management” to settle the differences. He also dismissed claims that the irregularities were borne out of the recent amendment of the party’s constitution, saying the polling station election were not part of the amendments. He said the competitive nature of the election with its attendant challenges in some of the polling stations is as a result of certain "interests" by some leading members of the party. The elected members from these polls will later elect constituency and national executives of the party, raising fears of possible manipulations by some interested prospective candidates. But Mr. Kwarteng gave the assurance that due process will be followed to ensure a clean electoral process. He however called on party members to channel their grievances to the party hierarchy for redress rather than going to the media.
