Former Chairman of the NPP Odoi Sykes has described as impracticable proposals put forward by the party’s Steering Committee to allow all party members to vote to elect Parliamentary and Presidential candidates.
He says he does not see the rational in implementing such a policy.
“If you are asking all card bearing members to elect a presidential candidate and all party members in the constituency to elect a parliamentary candidate then you are buying too much to chew”
The policy has been put forward strongly by the Akufo Addo campaign team as the panacea to the many confrontations that has dogged recent primaries, but other leading members of the party disagree.
According to Odoi Sykes the logistics to implement such a policy was non existent.
“We don’t have a national register .Our constituencies do not have genuine register of all card bearing members, and these are part of the problems which we need to tackle first, we need to update our records”
In an interview with Evans Mensah on News Night on Wednesday, Mr. Sykes said even when the records are updated he sees no reason why such a policy should be considered.
According to him, the same problems rearing its ugly head in the present system will persist even when the new policy is adopted.
He said the current system is being subverted unnecessarily and underscored the need for the rules under this system to be implemented to the latter.
Mr. Sykes who is also a member of the council of elders, singled out the Tema West Constituency for criticism, saying “Why shouldn’t we have primaries in Tema West, up to today? Because we want to preserve the position for one particular candidate, and this is not in the constitution”
“If we are prepared to respect our own constitution then there will be no problem” he added.
