The New Patriotic Party has welcomed calls for an Inter-Party Advisory Committee meeting to be convened to address the shortcomings in the ongoing biometric registration exercise but insists that meeting cannot resolve the teething violence that has been associated with the exercise.The Local Government Minister, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo suggested the Electoral Commission should, as a matter of urgency, call for the IPAC meeting to resolve some of the biometric registration challenges.He cited as examples the continued violence that has dogged the process around the country and the breakdown of registration machines at some polling areas.Ofosu Ampofo said unless these challenges are addressed through an IPAC meeting, the December elections cannot be guaranteed to be peaceful.He said due to poor publicity and education, a lot of people are rushing to register in polling stations which are far away from them.He feared that in the December elections, there will be the over concentration of voters at some polling centres which could make it impossible for all to vote.Other political parties have welcomed the call for an IPAC meeting.The General Secretary of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Monarh told Joy News the situation must not be allowed to degenerate before action is taken.He said IPAC must also resolve issues about the registration of minors.The Communications Director of the Convention People’s Party, Nii Armah Akomfra also agreed with the Local Government Minister for an IPAC meeting to be convened to resolve the challenges confronting the registration exercise.While he welcomed the call for an IPAC meeting, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie maintained that the IPAC meeting cannot resolve the violence that has dogged the exercise.He insisted that the police ought to be seen to be doing their job professionally and to arrest persons fomenting chaos in the registration exercise.
