Parliamentary candidate of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) for Ablekuma North Constituency Mohammed Abdulai Mubarak has joined calls on Parliament to drag Minority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu to the privileges committee for denigrating non-Akans in the country.
Ras Mubarak said the tribal comment by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart has the tendency to plunge the country into turmoil especially at a time Ghana is going into a crucial general elections in 2012.
Minority leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has come under attack from the NDC after he was reported to have said no Ga-Adangbe in the NPP have distinguished his or herself well to partner Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as running mate in the 2012 elections.
Even though he conceded MP for Dome-Kwabenya Professor Mike Aaron Ocquaye a Ga-Dangme and capable to partner the NPP flag-bearer, age has caught up with him making him ineligible for that position.
Also, Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, who is in favour of a North-South ticket, suffered that same fate when he said it would be impracticable for the NPP to have a Ga-Dangme running mate.
Nevertheless, speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday, Ras Mubarak said the NPP has shot itself in the foot with the tribal comments made by leading members of the party.
According to him, it does not come to him as a surprise because it is a tradition in the Dankwa-Busia family making the NPP inundated with "bigotry" and more tribal with no room for a non-Akan to rise to a respectable position in the party.
Ras Mubarak cited some instances, which he said clearly shows NPP that the party endorses discrimination and prejudice to corroborate his claims.
“It is a fact that Dr. Busia deliberately excluded people from the Volta region from his cabinet in 1972 and former President Kufuor in 2001 had no body from the Upper West region in his cabinet, an act which is a complete violation of the 1992 Constitution”.
The outspoken NDC member said attempts to malign the other tribes in the NPP is most unfortunate and very insulting.
“What is it that Nana Akufo-Addo has that the people from the Northern and Greater Accra regions do not have? Is it the third class degree from Legon or the politically miscalculated comments?"
But Dr. Sekou Nkrumah who also was a panelist on the programme disagreed with Ras Mubarak.
He said the NDC as usual would play vile propaganda with every issue and blow it out of proportion just to win cheap political point in its bid to retain power in 2012.
The political maverick also said it would be suicidal for the NPP in 2012 if Nana Akufo-Addo does not maintain Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate.
Sekou Nkrumah advised the NPP to work hard and rise above the Akan tag which is like an albatross on the party’s neck.
